Hand Dyed and painted fabrics by Paul Burega
Welcome to my colorful world of hand dyed and hand painted fabrics. Everywhere I look, I am inspired by nature, from the colorful flowers that bloom in my garden, to the autumn leaves in the forest. Nature's paintbrush has bold as well as subtle colors, if one only takes the time to really look. I am reminded of an old proverb, we have eyes, but do not see. Have you taken the time lately to smell the roses, and really look at the wonderful colors in those roses? This web site is my attempt to share my joy and enthusiasm for the colors I have seen in nature and reproduced in my fabrics. I have made a number of my fabrics available for sale so you can enhance your projects with just the "right shade" for that special accent.
As a photographer, I have taken pictures of those roses and other flowers, and sometimes a photograph points out those colors that you didn't see with your eyes. I have been inspired by some of the paintings by Georgia O'Keeffe, and I have created my own flower portraits in which I have attempted to capture the movement and beauty of the subtle colors achieved in nature. I hope that you will enjoy these colors and discover a new appreciation for shades of colors in flowers or those autumn leaves.I recently learned to create patchwork quilts, and have admired many art quilts in magazines and at quilt shows. My fabric stash includes a number of batiks, as they remind me of some of the hues that mother nature has painted in her garden.
Recently, I've had the opportunity to learn about fabric painting. Not being one who can just casually partake in a new venture, I dived right in, I immediately became enthralled with the fabrics I was able to turn out ina range of shades that were possible with the mixing of the colors. Dyeing fabric is like a giant chemistry experiment, with graduated cylinders, and cups of different colored dyes, creating many pieces of hand-painted fabrics.
I have since attended dyeing workshops and learned about techniques to bind fabrics, which caused the dye to take in patterns. I also had a hand in shibori pole dyeing, and I was excited with the results. I went home, and practiced, practiced, and practiced. I had different colors, different hues, and different values. Finally, I was seeing fabrics in the colors that I had seen in nature. Gentle shade variations, just like the variations that the differences in light cause when one really sees what one is looking at in the garden.
